Principal Research Adviser – Quantitative Research

The Social Research Centre, a specialist supplier of survey research services and quantitative research services to government and academic institutions, is looking to appoint a Principal Research Adviser to work directly to our Director of Quantitative Research.

This is a senior role and is responsible for the development and implementation of social research based projects to enhance the Social Research Centre’s position as a leader in the provision of quality social research services to its clients and other key stakeholders. 

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Proposal writing;
  • Client management;
  • The quality, timeliness and efficiency of the research projects, through monitoring all aspects of job performance, including:
    • Facilitating the definition and production of project specifications and deliverables
    • Defining and implementing project plans, schedules, tasks and resource requirements
    • Managing and reporting on project budget requirements and providing  financial information about project performance as requested
    • Monitoring and reporting on project progress, issues and solutions
    • Producing deliverables including reports, data files, cross tabulations and verbatims
  • Conducting quantitative and qualitative research in accordance with the organisation’s obligations and guidelines under ISO 20252.
  • Actively participating in team meetings and contributing to the review, development and implementation of project management procedures and practices.
  • Taking management responsibility for direct reports.  This could include senior researchers, researchers and/or research assistants.  This entails:
    • Weekly one-on-one meetings with direct reports
    • Taking responsibility for the effectiveness, efficiency and professional development of direct reports.  This includes conducting formal annual performance reviews
    • Adhering to the Social Research Centre’s HR policies and corporate values in all dealings with direct reports.

Qualifications and Competency Requirements

  • Tertiary degree in a relevant discipline or an equivalent level of expertise gained in a large and complex work environment.
  • Well developed quantitative (and qualitative) research skills including sampling, questionnaire design, statistical analysis and reporting
  • Ability to work alone or as a team member
  • Ability and willingness to work in a very ‘hands on’ project role – sometimes with limited availability of support staff
  • Ability to run a project team and coordinate the workflows of other team members
  • Willingness to mentor and train other research and project support staff
  • Superior ability to use relevant software (SPSS, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and other packages relevant to projects, as necessary
  • Ability to write / contribute to publication standard reports and presentations
  • Ability to document survey procedures and produce publication quality technical and methodological reports
  • Ability to respond to research briefs / write high-quality proposals
  • Committed work ethic in terms of documenting decisions, transparency, leaving an audit trail, using professional email protocols and maintaining system files
  • Demonstrated expertise in business development and client management
  • Superior leadership and project management skills
  • An excellent understanding of the tender process for government and social research including demonstrated  experience in proposal preparation/submission and/or writing

An attractive salary package, commensurate with skills and experience, will be negotiated.
